Size: the ant was about 5 mm

No expert at all here...
But I make out 4 legs on the lowest "aphid", which if right, obviously makes it not an aphid.

One of those "legs" is actually the beak.

but that would be strange indeed if these guys had eight legs!

Look like aphids
with honeydew for the ant being excreted in droplets from the body.

although I can't see any obvious "tail-pipes" aphids certainly make sense.

 
Aphids.
Many aphids are root-feeders, so this makes sense. I don't know if their morophology differs from their aboveground counterparts, but the cornicles might make it tougher to maneuver in the soil.
