Springtail - Hypogastrura nivicola

Springtail - Hypogastrura nivicola
Victoria/Carver Park Reserve, Carver County, Minnesota, USA
March 10, 2007
Size: 1.8mm
Frans Janssens has identified these as Hypogastrura nivicola. This photo was taken just before it jumped and is of particular interest in that it shows the eversed anal sacs. Frans says these anal sacs are sticky and may help the springtail attach and not bounce upon landing. The next two pictures are details of the anal sacs, the minute anal spine (that identifies it as H. nivicola) and the peculiar composed eye of this same individual.

Sticky eversible sacs
Hypogastruridae have several of them. 1. at the collophore (the ventral tube; all Collembola have these); 2. at the anus such as seen in this unique picture!; 3. the close relatives of Hypogastrura: Ceratophysella, have also eversible sacs at the 3rd antennal segments. All these eversible sacs may be used to stick to the substrate after returning to it from a jump into the air.
