PoppyVac Fly - Eumerus

PoppyVac Fly - Eumerus
Fullerton Arboretum, Fullerton, Orange County, California, USA
March 9, 2007
Fly is happily vaccuuming inside of poppy, going back and forth, back and forth. When it's obscured by the center of the flower, I give the stem a shake. Fly rolls out of poppy and falls to ground, making no attempt to fly. Any opinions as to why? (I keep thinking "pollen rapture", but am roundly scoffed at.)

Thanks, Martin, for the ID and the move.
And here I was thinking "soldier fly". Hah!
