not Trechus
I'm quite sure this is a Paratachys (subtribe Tachyina), not a Trechus. Note how the recurved stria at the back of the elytra curves around the discal seta. Also, the head does not have the prominent frontal grooves, and you can faintly see the subulate apical palpomere.

Moved from Trechus.
Thanks Chris, it's a new species for bugguide!

Trechus quadristriatus (Schrank)
Yes, this is Trechus quadristriatus (Schrank). Note the sharp incised lines near the base of the pronotum, and how the posterior edge of the pronotum slopes upwards towards the lateral margin.

very instructive picture!
Dear Tom,

you produced the first pic in bugguide to be safely identified as Trechus sp. (Carabidae)!

Exellently seen is the key character of Trechus and allied genera, the so-called "Trechus-bow" in the apical portion of the elytra: The sutural stria is turning outwards on apex, then turning upwards again, and partly circling around the posteriour discal trichobothria.
Discal striae, as a rule, are for the most part effaced in Trechus spp.

The species pictured here might be T.quadristriatus, also represented in Europe - but this is just a guess (I do not know how nearctic species look like).

cheers, Boris

Trechus sp.
That's great! I can't wait for the warm weather to really get here, and find lots more beetles. Thanks for the id Boris!
