Blue Bottle Fly? Calliphora sp? - Calliphora

Blue Bottle Fly? Calliphora sp? - Calliphora
Central Park, New York County, New York, USA
March 14, 2007
Size: appx 11mm
Several of these flies were active mid-afternoon on a very warm March day. Abdomen looked more metallic blue than the pic shows. Is ID correct? Species possible? Thanks, Sandy

Looks like
Calliphora vicinia to me. This is based on reddish bucca and because it looks like there should be a light colored basicosta.

From what I've seen in Ohio, this is the most common bluebottle in March.

Hi Steve! Thanks for the info. We had no idea what to expect in March, so were glad to find these. Will check this out, as the only species listed here is Calliphora vomitoria.

I have a key to Calliphora no
I have a key to Calliphora north of Mexico that I could email you if you like. Some early couplets depend on counting the setae on the back but otherwise it is pretty useful for photos.

Calliphora vicina
Yes, would be interested in seeing the key. Will post another pic showing the wings, It's not great, but may help confirm your ID. Sandy
