Psychomorpha epimenis nectaring on wild plum - Psychomorpha epimenis

Psychomorpha epimenis nectaring on wild plum - Psychomorpha epimenis
Williamson County, Texas, USA
March 7, 2007
I was looking for the Olive Juniper Hairstreak, Lyside Sulphur, and Common Buckeye butterflies that I usually find on the Mexican plum as it hits its stride...but having seen a post in a Texas butterfly listserv about this little moth, I spotted a small "black" moth with a flash of red high in the tree. Amazingly, it came down and--though moving around a lot--gave me the chance to get some really good images of it. It's the first one I'd ever seen, and as it was my birthday, I took it as a special present. (Later that day, the Other Shoe dropped, but that's not a BugGuide topic.) I got one shot with the sunlight through it from above, but it's blurrier, so I'm not submitting it.

Nice find
Oh, and happy (belated) birthday.
