Throscidae

Throscidae
Lantzville, Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada
August 26, 2014
Size: 3mm
I found this on the outside of a window about an hour after the sun went down. I spent the rest of the night wondering what family it could be in. It was only this morning I realised it looked a lot like a stout click beetle which led me to Throscidae.

I am guessing it is Aulonothroscus validus

Frassed

Moved, this is Aulonothroscus..
so in the PNW should be A. validus. The other one I wanted you to revisit may not be Aulonothroscus; I cannot see the tarsal grooves (at least in the images).

Moved from Aulonothroscus.

I did not think I had started collecting this long ago
but it turns out I have this specimen and it is a Trixagus as well! These are all terrible photos but I key the specimen to Trixagus carinicollis and it has the distinctly long scutellum which fits.

I do have an Aulonothroscus that I have photographed. I'll find the images and upload it.

Thanks
That's a deceiving central shot. I'd say grass the entire series and maybe reimage when time allows.

Yep
I agree

...or just keep the first dorsal shot

I will snoop around...I don't recall offhand but I don't think there are very many described species in the PNW.

Moved from Beetles.

Thanks Blaine
Thanks Blaine

In this genus I think there is only one listed for BC in the Checklist of Beetle of Canada and Alaska. Not sure about south of the border though.

A stunning little beast I was lucky to even see it.

same, can we revisit this one?

I don't have this one
But will check out the other one when I get a change

Cool to frass some from this set then?

Yep
Any or all is fine by me
