Could be T. tuberculatus as you speculate, but its hard to tell species of Trox from photos. Do you still have the specimen? If its a male and you can get a pic of the genitalia, species ID can be confirmed.

yes, I still have the beetle. But I've never tried to pull anything out like that, and I'm not sure I'm ready to try with this one either.
