Unknown beetle - Eudiagogus pulcher

Unknown beetle - Eudiagogus pulcher
Galveston, TX, Texas, USA
March 20, 2007
Size: ~ half an inch
This beetle was found in Galveston, Texas. I'm not sure what type it is, but I think it's along the lines of the scarab/long horned beetle family possibly? Any help identifying this beetle is greatly appreciated. Also - it kept stiffening it's legs and pushing up while the pictures were being taken (see the second photo). Any idea what it was doing?
Thanks!!
