Tabanus atratus Black Horse Fly - female - Tabanus - female

Tabanus atratus Black Horse Fly - female - Tabanus - Female
East Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey, USA
September 2, 2014
Size: 20mm
Found at CF lights in a wooded backyard.

Despite the heat, it moved sluggishly and allowed for a good shot.
I would imagine that this is fairly common here but this is the first NJ post for this in September.

not atratus
i got stuck at couplet 73 of Stone's key: fore tibia unicolorous vs. bicolored ?

Moved
Moved from Black Horse Fly.

ID?
I doubt this is Tabanus atratus.

Suggestions?
This was posted after an ID was offered from a 'higher authority', John. I certainly CANNOT comment on flies with any authority. All I could do was get to the genus level. Do you have a suggestion as to what it might be? I'll go with the consensus of people who know much better than I. Thanks.

Tabanus catenatus?
Tabanus catenatus looks similar. I can't be sure of genus.

Interesting!
That was my first guess, John…(see here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=837707152928982&set=gm.464834830325709&type=1&theater). But I wouldn't call it skill, just dumb luck. However, I was 'corrected' and then posted here with that information. I wish someone else would chime in.
