Mystery insect possibly ichneumon on elk thistle - Acantholyda
Rocky Mountain NP, Rocky Mountain National Park County, Colorado, USA
July 25, 2014
This mystery insect does have a wasp-like face and the long antennae of an ichneumon. It was on Elk Thistle on the Ute Trail at about 11,750 feet elevation. Any help is much appreciated.

Pamphilidae
A sawfly. Common name: leaf rolling and web spinning sawfly. The caterpillar-like larvae roll leaves or spin webs in which they feed. Some are gregarious, and feed in large groups.

Pamphiliidae
Thanks so much for identifying this mystery insect. I had thought of a sawfly, but the only ones I am familiar with are Common Sawflies and Horntails. Pamphiliids are a whole new family for me. Your help is much appreciated.

Acantholyda?

Acantholyda?
Thanks so much for moving this mystery insect, Ken. And I appreciate your including the image of the Acantholyda, which is very similar to my sawfly on Elk Thistle. In the high elevation where this was seen, there were a very few short shrubby windswept conifers. According to Kaufman & Eaton's field guide, genus Acantholyda has conifer hosts in the Rockies. Probably this genus is correct. At some point I may be able to check in the CU entomology collection for local species. Thank you again -- for all your help.
