Please identify red bug - Jadera haematoloma

Please identify red bug - Jadera haematoloma
Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida, USA
March 24, 2007
Size: about a half inch
This bright red bug is multiplying all over my front and back yard in central Florida. Does it destroy plants or is it harmless? I did a lot of research and the closest thing I could find that looked like it was a cotton stainer. Is this a type of cotton stainer?

THANK YOU!
Thanks! You guys are great! I looked around, and there are ones that looked just like the adults shown on the red-shouldered/golden-raintree bug. These must be multiple nymphs I am seeing. Thanks so much.

Glad we could help
Adults are much easier to identify :-)

Looks to us more like
Jadera haematoloma - Red-shouldered Bug. Images and info in the guide here - often found on and under golden rain trees

Seconded, with another possibility
Note that this is an immature specimen, aka nymph. (That's indicated by the absence of wings.) This factor no doubt complicated your research, as nymphs are often all but ignored. An insect book I read recently noted that only about 5% of immatures have been identified.

I agree with John and Jane, but consider box elder bug as well:

When you're at this photo, click the Info tab for the same sort of info J&J directed you to. Also check the photos of adults on both species, so you'll know what to look for next. Either way, I'm fairly sure they're annoying but not otherwise problematic.
