False Honey Ant - Prenolepis imparis - female

False Honey Ant - Prenolepis imparis - Female
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
March 24, 2007
This ant-like insect spent some time crawling around on the window so I managed to get a few good shots. After I came back inside, the insect was still on the window, only this time the other insect was attached to it. (see following photos) I'm not sure if this was mating behavior or parasitic behavior.

False honey Ants (Prenolepis imparis) - winged female
Carpenter ant queens have a differently sphaped alitrunk. Moreover, this very early date of "swarming" is peculiar to the false honey Ant.

Thanks for the id. I submitted some photos of ants last year which (to my eyes) look like they might also possibly be honey ants. The photos are currently listed under aphids since there was also an aphid in the photo.

Thanks
Thanks for the correction Richard. I don't have a lot of experience with ants, but I should have caught that simply due to the head size and coloration. Thanks again.

Winged ant
This is a female winged ant, probably Camponotus or Lasius genus. The other pictures are of male/female mating.

Thanks for the identification and clarification.
