Moved from Lyric Cicada. Thanks for the help!

Tibicen davisi (Male)
Firstly: Note the eyes!....As has been mentioned on several postings/responses, T. lyricen has DARK eyes (even when teneral).
(Review other images in this section - http://bugguide.net/node/view/12261/bgimage)
In contrast, T. davisi is known to have several eye colorations - incl. this nice bluish-grey/green! Cumberland Co., is in the "Sandhills" region of NC (part of the "Upper Coastal Plain")- interestingly there is more variation in T. davisi coloration and size in the Coastal Plain and Sandhills.

Secondly: Note the venter of the abdomen. Although teneral, there still isn't sufficient indications of a "well defined broad black medial stripe" as seen in venter of T. lyricen. In contrast, T. davisi can have indications of striping, but much like this cicada, it is not "evenly defined" as seen in T. lyricen.

Thirdly: T. lyricen males typically have darker, more brownish colored opercula (although not immediately after eclosion, certainly once developed and even while mildly teneral).

Finally: Very wide head...slightly disproportionate relative to body size as compared to most Tibicen species.

Tibicen lyricen
Tibicen lyricen, a close relative of the dog-day cicada, but with much larger opercula (the white flaps you see just behind the hind legs). These flaps cover the tympana ("ears") in males, and each species has a different shape of opercula.
