Biography:
My ongoing research project is a survey of Wisconsin Ground Beetles (Coleoptera : Carabidae) conducted from literature searches, collection inventories, and ten years of field work. Otherwise, my interest in the North American carabid fauna outside Wisconsin is rather random. Contact information at Directory by searching my last name.
Instructions for mailing limited carabid specimens for species identification:
Requires our prior mutual agreement. Specimens can be safely mailed while still flexible (freshly killed and unpinned) by securely wrapping them in a small wad of alcohol-dampened paper towel along with *penciled* paper slip stating locality & date. Adding the BugGuide photo identification numbers would be very helpful. If specimens are already mounted and dry, please first rehydrate in hot water for 20 min before wrapping in alcohol-dampened paper towel. Please *avoid* cotton, tissue paper, and ink writing which bleeds from alcohol vapor. More than one specimen inside a wad is okay if they are from the same collection event. One or more such wads can be gently stuffed into a small plastic (medicine) vial or Ziploc bag, mailed in a rather small cardboard box via USPS - either 'priority' or slower/cheaper 'library rate'. See above Directory for mailing address. In return for keeping the material I will email you or post the correct species identification. Unfortunately, North American members of certain large genera (Amara, Bembidion, Elaphropus, Pterostichus-subg. Hypherpes) are currently not fully represented by published taxonomic keys. The underrepresentation pertains mostly to the western and far southern fauna for which I can not promise successful species identifications. Thank you for contributing to my comparative reference collection of North American Carabidae.
