Northern Crescent or Pearl Crescent? - Phyciodes - male

Northern Crescent or Pearl Crescent? - Phyciodes - Male
Mayfair, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada
September 6, 2014
This is the only view I could get of the wings before the butterfly disappeared. I know the Northern Crescent has orange tips to the antennae so I'm guessing it's identity from that feature. Found in a city garden.

Northern crescent
The wing shape pulled back suggests northern. The brown spot on the hindwing in this photograph is smudgy and the right amber color for Northern. And the antennal clubs have substantial orange. Also, the tips of the wings are open and pale. And it was in Canada.

this is a male
pattern looks like P. thoros more to me, but there are orange antenna tips. September date is really late for P. cocyta.

Moved from Northern Crescent.

Looks like Pearl Crescent, female
with strong brown reticulations of HW but at edge of northern range which favors Northern Crescent ID.

Thanks. Those are both good p
Thanks. Those are both good pointers which I'll use in the future.

I'm leaning toward
Northern. But that's just a guess.
