I watched several members of this ant's colony carry spent flowers of this Veronica spp. to a rally point where they were being piled on the ground (the third photo). Any idea why the ants were doing this?

The Formica pallidefulva group was recently revised taxonomically. See this article for all the gory details: http://antbase.org/ants/publications/21293/21293.pdf . This one is in the darker part of the color variation of F. pallidefulva.
