This is the same unidentified caterpillar found last year in the same location (crawling across the sidewalk underneath the same large Douglas fir). I did capture it this time (9/24/14) and am going to try to rear it--so far, it's been eating Douglas fir needles and is very active, hence the difficulty of getting good images! Will update if it molts, etc.
