pupal cases, northern caddisfly - Pycnopsyche
Milton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA
August 3, 2014
Size: 22 mm
Closed at both ends. ID very tentative without seeing occupant, but combination of size, shape, materials, diapause state and habitat suggests this genus widespread in eastern US. A much smaller mortarjoint casemaker larva Psilotreta frontalis is visible at left. Shallow pool under cut bank in mostly-dry Chestnut Run, Blue Hills Reservation. Larger image.
