Stuart,

That shape interested me so I went looking in the Notodontas. Had you considered 7993 – Heterocampa lunata. I have a friend looking for those so you might catch one if you see it again and don't mind sharing a specimen. It would need a hind wing for an ID and surely is a dark one if my hunch is right.

 
He is just too worn to tell for sure.
He was high up on a light fixture so I couldn't get any better shots. Thanks
