Xenochaetina muscaria

Xenochaetina muscaria
Columbia, Howard County, Maryland, USA
November 12, 1992
Size: 3 mm
This fly has been identified by Dr. Stephen Gaimari, of the California Department of Food and Agriculture. It is submitted for your interest.

is this
Xenochaetina or Xentochaetina?

it's been awhile
so i'm changing it to Xenochaetina, which I'm sure is right. I hope no offense is taken.

Name of the Lauxaniid fly
Xenochaetina appears to be the correct name. What I'm curious about is the origin of this name. "Xeno" suggests something foreign, and perhaps "chaetina" has something to do with chaetotaxy. I'd appreciate any comments on that.

Strange hairs
This genus has some small hairs near the base of Rs that are unusual in Lauxaniidae.
