saugage-link antennae - Holopsis marginicollis

saugage-link antennae - Holopsis marginicollis
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
March 27, 2007
Size: about 1.2 mm
This Minute Hooded Beetle's antennae seem pretty distinctive because they have a wide section near the base reaching to near mid-antenna, then the antenna re-widens to form an elongate club with only a short contricted area between wide sections, much like two sausage links. It was one of several beetles clinging to the bottom of some rumpled packing paper I found beside the highway.

This was a trash beetle day for me. I had gotten the itch after work to explore the border of a ride-share parkinglot/visitor center and the parkway that borders the Nashua River and wound up spending most of my time turning over trash along the highway to see what was hiding underneath. My only regret is that I didn't have a supersized trash bag to collect it all as my good deed of the decade :-)

Anyway, this is my first posting from my "trash collection."

Don Chandler says
This is likely Holopsis (Corylophodes) marginicollis, which *is* listed in the UNH checklist under the old genus name. My guess is the name is in recognition of the brown rim around the front and sides of the hooded pronotum that we can see in some of these images.
