diptera: cryptochetidae - from Alameda, California - Cryptochetum iceryae Alameda, Alameda County, California, USA May 2, 2014 Size: 1.5mm
Small metallic green fly picked up while sweeping in ivy. It keys out to Cryptochetidae in Manual of Neartic Diptera, and the antenna look to be distinctive. The arista consist of a tiny bump on the anterior dorsal end of the third antenna segment. According to the Manual, these flies were introduced to California from Australia, and we only have one species in California.
Images were taken through my microscope, at 40x and 60x, and are the best I have been able to pull off so far. The specimen is pointed, and unfortunately the head is rotated 90 degrees to the left.
Anyone able to confirm that this is Cryptochetidae? Thanks much.
