Haustellum Morphology

Haustellum Morphology
Ames, Story County, Iowa, USA
A suggestion: how about a section for morphology pics... since the purpose of this website is to increase the entomological knowledge of the general populace it would seem useful to illustrate some of the key features used in identifications as an introduction of sorts... some photo ideas: chaetotaxy, dipteran thoracic sclerites, coleopteran coxae, various genetalia, wing venation, etc etc etc...

here's something I did with Scathophaga... this would obviously be better accomplished by someone with some actual photographic talent, but this will suffice as an example

Cyclorrhaphan Haustellum
Labrum: triangularly shaped and located dorsally
Mandible: not present
Maxillae: reduced to a 1-2 segmented palpus
Labium: the fusion of the 2-segmented labial palpi creates the labellum, the end of the which has sclerotized channels called pseudotrachea radiating from the food channel
Hypopharynx: internal tongue-like mouthpart (not visible)

Excellent, used in glossary
I've created some glossary entries for mouthparts and added links to them in your caption, plus used the photo as a thumbnail in the glossary entries. Thanks!
