A large mysterious bug - Pteronarcys

A large mysterious bug - Pteronarcys
Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada
March 31, 2007
Size: about 4cm
I found this monster crawling on my desk. Our house is in a wooded area, so it might be some tree bug, but I have no idea what it is. Can anyone shed some light? Many thanks!

Moved
Moved from Giant Stoneflies.

Pteronarcys
Considering the size, this probably either californica or dorsata (both are found in BC). The other BC member of the family is Pteronarcella badia, which is smaller and often has short-winged males.

Thanks
Thanks for the ID guys. This explain a lot. We have a creek just outside our house, and it is spring. We moved to Canada from the UK only 3 years ago, and many specimens of insects over here still fill us with bewilderment, if not with a little fear.

Wow!
Nice find. Guide page here.

Giant Stonefly
Pteronarcyidae: Pteronarcys... there are 8 species in North America
