ahhh... it may have been on its way to find a place to pupate. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's the Great Ash Sphinx but I'll wait for someone more knowledgeable to chime in...

I think it's Sphinx chersis
Cool find! I think it's Sphinx chersis the Great Ash Sphinx, but I'm not a hawkmoth expert. I believe the reddish color develops shortly before pupating. What was it's behavior? What was the plant it was on?

 
Caterpillar
It was moving across my patio when I noticed it, so I don't know what plants it preferred. I moved it off the patio into a creosote bush, as seen in the last photo; a little while later it was gone.
