Explanation of Names
Author: Harris, 1841
Size
The wingspan is 71-93 mm
Identification
Wings white with black pattern. Related species have at least the hind wing not white; except, H. magnifica is similar, but larger with usually bolder black pattern, and occurs further south. H. magmifica is considered by many authors to be a subspecies of H. hera.
Range
Western North America, north of Arizona and New Mexico.
Food
Caterpillars feed on basin big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) and sand sagebrush (A. filifolia). Adults do not feed.
