Carrollton, Carroll County, Georgia, USA
October 13, 2014
Size: Just over 1 inch
This hornet was seen around a small, wooded area. It landed on a post and began to chew at the post. It seemed undisturbed by my getting near it.

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

Possible identification?
Dolichovespula maculata - Bald-faced Hornet?

Yep
Confirmed.
See here: . Note the same abdominal and head markings, and also the same "Smoky" Wings. As noted in the identification section, there can be some variation in markings, some based on gender.

Thanks!
