Hodges #4946 - American Lotus Borer Moth - Ostrinia penitalis

Hodges #4946 - American Lotus Borer Moth - Ostrinia penitalis
Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida, USA
October 12, 2014
Size: forewing ~17mm
At outdoor light - provides October image for Florida. Regarding BG's Info page for this moth, the matter of size may need reconsideration. The forewing length of my moth is about 17mm (note that the groove it sits on is ~10mm wide), and I listed the same length for the moth I posted a year ago. The few measurements available for BG-posted images are between 12mm and 15mm. On the other hand, the only number provided on BG's Info page is 21mm wingspan of Jim Vargo's pinned specimen. It clearly is at the very low end.
