male Tree Cricket sonogram - Oecanthus forbesi - male

male Tree Cricket sonogram - Oecanthus forbesi - Male
Wheaton/Danada Forest Preserve, DuPage County, Illinois, USA
October 6, 2014
Size: 22mm
This is a screenshot of the audio from the youtube clip of this male stridulating. I count 56 pulses at the 40-41 second interval. I chopped off the first half of the clip for youtube, which is only 25 sec long; the video was very shaky at the beginning due to wind. The temperature was about 60 F.

Awesome.
Although the pulse rate (55-56 pulses per second) doesn't match up for 60 degrees F on the chart developed by Dr. Walker http://entomology.ifas.ufl.edu/walker/buzz/594a.htm, the rate of 56 pulses per second is too fast to be O. nigricornis. O. nigricornis would have to be singing in a temperature of 26C (~79 F).

O. forbesi would be expected to be singing in a spot with a temperature of 69 F (~21C). So that is a much better match for this singing male.

Thank you!
Next time will pay more attention to temperature!
