Wasp Mantidfly - Climaciella brunnea
Cumberland County, North Carolina, USA

Size: about an inch
Lighting wasn't great...wish this shot had been better since this is the only one I've ever seen.

mantidfly
My wife and I found one in our pop up camper after we came home from Minnesota...We live in Illinois, do they live this far north? We had no idea they even existed up here?

Very cool
It's a great find. It looks so small on your hand. I had forgotten how small they are.

We found one!
WOW!! What an amazing insect. My 9 year old son loves all types of creatures and when he brought this one home I WAS A LITTLE WORRIED. I had never seen one before. Do they sting? or bite? So many questions?

not sure how?
We took some pictures of the cool insect. Not sure how to upload them.

I think it is a great shot. I
I think it is a great shot. I saw one on my Yucca plant laying eggs and took some pictures of it but none of them were in the same class as yours! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epgac-RjA0A

It stayed there laying her eggs for over 24 hours. I had all the time I wanted to take the shot but just could not hold the dang camera still enough. Hate messing with the tripod and this is my result :(

I had never seen one before either and just thought it was a wasp. I might have seen many and not known it though.

I live in Roscommon Michigan and love watching and photographing the little critters. Opens up a whole new world to me.

#10133 Identification (confirmed) -- Climaciella brunnea
This is the mantispid Climaciella brunnea (Say in Keating, 1824).

Very coool! North Carolina records
Wow. These are in the NCSU Collection with 41 specimens, fairly common. Brimley, p. 29 (1) lists Mansispa brunnea (synonymous, no doubt) from Carolina Beach noted as common in summers by two other collectors.

Neat, I've wondered where I could see these things. I've seen the green ones up here, but not the yellowjacket mimic.

wasp/bee
I found one of these in Salem NH. I took pictures. How do I upload pics on here?

Polistes mimic
Actually, they mimic paper wasps. I am wondering if I have seen these and dismissed them as Polistes! I've certainly been in areas where they are known to occur.

Passing for Polistes
Uhh, I meant Polistes, not yellowjacket. (Brain wasn't working right.) I've probably passed them off as Polistes before, too. On my list to look for next summer. Seems like the North Carolina coastal plain may be good, though this is a widespread species.
