Sciodrepoides ?NEW GENUS? - Sciodrepoides terminans

Sciodrepoides ?NEW GENUS? - Sciodrepoides terminans
Ames, Story County, Iowa, USA
April 2, 2007
Size: 3 mm
I've keyed this out in American Beetles to Sciodrepoides... we currently don't have this genus in bugguide (though plenty of images have been suggested as such)...

collected under deer carcass... not particularly numerous, though I may have merely overlooked them due to their cryptic nature

2 species:

S. fumatus terminans
S. watsoni hornianus

...any of our beetle-ologists know how to separate the two?

separation
Dear Joe,

credits for the new genus and species!

I assume that separation of the two will work like in Europe, disregarding that yours are considered seperate subspecies:

Antennae stout, articles wider than long from article 4 on = watsoni
Antennae more slender, articles 4 & 5 not wider than long = fumatus

I may add, that Sciodrepoides spp. differ from Catops spp. in their elytra lacking the shale-like sheen, characteristic for the latter genus.

cheers, Boris

thanks Boris... I suppose thi
thanks Boris... I suppose this would be S. watsoni hornianus...

. . . then read again, please
I just had a look at S.watsoni two days ago, and antennal segments 4 & 5 are conspicously transverse in this species.

:-)
