Carpenter ants and possibly mites - Camponotus - female

Carpenter ants and possibly mites - Camponotus - Female
rural, Dallas County, Iowa, USA
October 26, 2014
Size: 7.3 mm (worker)
I am linking these photos--not the same individual, but from the same nest. I found these while splitting wood. Camponotus pennsylvanicus? Many individuals had what seemed to be mites attached, but I can't make out any features on them. Are they mites, or are they something else?
