It might seem like a proper leaf mine, but these are sneaky little buggers. After initially mining in the leaf blade, the larva follows a vein to the midrib, then enters the petiole, then disappears behind the bark of the stem. I suspect it overwinters in the roots (or at least very low in the stem) before emerging as a moth in the spring. I discovered these on Nantucket on arrowwood and have now found them in the Berkshires of western MA on two additional viburnum species. Interesting to see that this species is far more widespread than that... I told Dave Wagner and Don Davis about this (they're working on the Moths of North America fascicle on Gracillariinae), and they had never encountered it or heard of it. I'm trying to rear some in plants that I dug up and potted. We'll see how that goes...

Good luck!
