springtail - Isotomurus

springtail - Isotomurus
Antrim, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
April 3, 2007
Size: 1.1mm
This tiny springtail just kept jumping nonstop. I tried to tire it out by touching it with a piece of paper to make it jump, and I was at it for about 15 minutes, and when it finally stopped, this is what it looked like.

Moved from Isotomidae.

Isotomurus sp.
Given the cover of short setae, the middorsal line and the dark dot between the eye patches. A juveile specimen.
There is no advantadge to make Isotomidae jump. Only in Tomoceridae it can be useful to make visible the array of dental spines on the furca.
