Immature Gray Bird? -

I have photographed quite a few grasshoppers on the pineapple sage in the back yard. I'm starting to think they may be the same grasshopper species, just different phases.

Quite likely you are correct
especially since other
Schistocerca
species are less likely to be at this growth stage except in spring and early summer.
