Mite - Glyphanoetus

Mite - Glyphanoetus
Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada
November 1, 2014
Size: .24 mm
I count six dorsal lobes (x 2 rows) supporting long setae. They are easily lost with the poor optical acuity and lighting issues but I believe they are consistent across the four photos. Nos. 1, 3, and 4 face horizontally toward the side, 2 and 5 are more vertically oriented, and 6 is horizontal to the rear.

Histiostomatidae
Astigmata: Histiostomatidae
These mites are semi-aquatic/aquatic and feed on microorganisms and small bits of detritus swept up from surface scum with their mouthparts.

Histiostomatidae
Dorsal lobes & long setae suggest the genus Glyphanoetus, species of which are typically found in wet decaying matter.

Thanks
If semi-aquatic means west coast rain, we've had it this month. Other than that, it's just from a scrap of lumber buried under leaf and bark mulch behind the shed.
