Carpenter Bee? - Xylocopa virginica - male

Carpenter Bee? - Xylocopa virginica - Male
Coatesville, Chester County, Pennsylvania, USA
November 3, 2014
I was sad that this was dead. I feel kind of horrible for posting these since in the ID submission description, it says 'We prefer to see images of live specimens. Please, do not submit mutilated bugs. Dead specimens, particularly squashed ones, are difficult to make out.'
I prefer to see live ones too, and I kind of find dead ones offensive depending on the conditions. In this case, the specimen was quite fresh and I felt it was a good representation of a specimen, even if it was dead.
Mainly I would just like an ID, so if you can't use it for the guide because it is dead, I totally understand. Also, not sure if gender is a possibility?
