I originally thought this was an American Rubyspot, but someone told me the dark spot on the wing wasn't normal. Is this perhaps a Smoky Rubyspot?

I've asked several experience
I've asked several experienced folks including a knowledgeable friend in Richmond to look at your photo. All lean toward Smoky Rubyspot, but all asked if the dark thorax is real or just poor lighting. Anyway, the consensus of a number of good folks is Smoky, so we'll go with that for now.

Interesting critter. Smoky typically has more dark in the wing base than this, but I agree that the dark tips are not usually encountered on American. I can't make out much about the thorax pattern in this shot from this angle. I'll see if some others will look at this.
