Helicobia - NEW GENUS - Helicobia rapax - female

Helicobia - NEW GENUS - Helicobia rapax - Female
Hanover, Jo Daviess County, Illinois, USA
August 2, 2014
Collected with pitfall and carrion traps at a restored prairie. This is a common species in my samples.

Of importance is the haired post-alar wall, frontal bristles diverging anteriorly, parafacial with single hair row, and setae on R1.

This is a fairy diminutive species of sarcophagid. Size is usually somewhere around 5-6mm, with males being a tiny bit larger. Occasional females are larger still, around 7-8mm.

Moved
Moved from Helicobia.

Moved
Moved from Sarcophaginae.

But wait, there's more...
A recent paper reduced Helicobia to a subgenus of Sarcophaga.

http://sarcophagidae.myspecies.info/node/87

I will email Professor Pape for his thoughts on the proper name for this fly.

...
I'm starting to think that all sarcophagids are either Sarcophaga or Blaesoxipha...

This one hasn't been absorbed after all
Since 2010 Helicobia has been kicked out of Sarcophaga.

There was a deliberate move towards large genera. Sarcophagidae and Tachinidae were excessively split in the early 20th Century.

Snail country
At least two of your species are facultative parasitoids of terrestrial snails. Are there any snails in the sample site?

Some of your submissions are missing the state. If you set a state in your profile it will be added automatically.

Snails...
There is one large (dime-sized) species of snail, but I've only seen a few specimens from my samples. They must be pretty abundant considering the hundreds of Helicobia I've collected so far.
