S-Banded Tiger Beetle - Cicindelidia trifasciata - male - female

S-Banded Tiger Beetle - Cicindelidia trifasciata - Male Female
Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California, USA
June 14, 2014
The "S-banded" central maculations are distinctive in this species...thin and deeply curved, and with small scale "sub-wiggles". A quite beautiful pattern.

The range map in Pearson, Knisley, & Kazilek(1) indicates the coastal southern California populations are remarkably disjunct from those occurring on the east coast of the US to the Gulf of Mexico...and they remark that the species ranges all the way to Chile!
