Centipede/millipede - Tylobolus

Moved from Rhinocricidae.

The color pattern is consistent with other observations and descriptions of Tylobolus in the San Francisco Bay Area (e.g. here). Provisionally, this might be T. castaneus, described in by Keeton (1966) as "Dark, almost black, with posterior part of hindbelt cherry red and margin yellow", but I am somewhat skeptical that color alone can distinguish species.

I don't know of any spiroboli

I don't know of any spirobolids with this banded/striped color pattern. I was sent a photo of a similar-looking, stretched out spirobolidan in Marin Co. that myself and other think can only be a representative of Rhinocricidae that has been introduced to Marin Co. and, from the fact that this photo is posted here, apparently has established a viable population.

Millipede

It is a millipede, they curl up defensively to protect their heads and softer undersides.

It appears to be in Tylobolus, I am not able to narrow further.

Dr. Shelley may be able to narrow based on range, but most of what we would need is hidden in this image.
