Common Name of Beetle
In Oklahoma and in Texas all my life, this harmless beetle is known as a "June Bug" or sometimes as a "May Beetle." I have seen waves of them spread over the towns and fields, just like a plague, but mostly food for the birds. They were the bane of merchants in some summers when conditions were just right; storeowners swept them out of their stores like a recurrence of the Plagues! Hence, the expression in English of someone catching on to
something quickly: "like a chicken on a June bug!" There was also the joke that the hapless beetle was used to make soy sauce! We even tried to use them for bait! Nothing really ever materialized from this plentiful source of protein(?) But we active, full-of-energy, joking,
inventive neighborhood schoolchildren never gave up, trying to invent the perfect use for God's plentiful, crawly, pleasant-minded June Bugs!
