Male neon skimmer (Libellula croceipennis)? - Libellula croceipennis
San Diego, California, USA
October 4, 2014
Size: ~3"
Male (?) observed resting on dwarf cattail (Typha minima) in backyard bog filter for fish pond. Displayed territoriality when conspecific approached, but shares the pond with a small blue dragonfly that occasionally visits. Egg laying behavior (hovering and flicking abdomen in water) was observed in another individual (orange-brown rather than scarlet) in summer; naiad (presumably of same species) also briefly observed when aquatic vegetation was disturbed.
