Good question
According to Brock & Kaufman, the FW tip is diagnostic. I've checked your photo of the
Dogface
, and the FW tip does resemble that of a California Dogface. On rare occasions, females do have the Dogface pattern, and Hartmut mentioned that hybridization between the two species does occur where their range overlaps, but I'm not sure about the extent of hybridization. We should bring this question up on the appropriate page.

I am a novice at this business & don't have but one reference book to look at, along with the BGN website. Confusion reigns at times.

I know how you feel :-)
The diversity of North American insect fauna and the massive size of BugGuide's 'imagebase' may initially be somewhat overwhelming for new visitors - I sort of felt that way when I first stumbled upon this site. But, that's where dedicated editors and specialists come in to help us with our ID's, and given some time, you'll come to get more of the hang of it :-)
