Found this sawfly on a buckeye leaf at the edge of a stream near a field. There were a few others on nearby leaves, along with some Notodontid caterpillars. It looks similar to .

Too bad you didn't raise it, since as Dave Smith commented on the other photo, buckeye isn't a known host for Dimorphopteryx. At least now we know a little more about the geographic distribution of this mystery bug, though...

True--had I known that beforehand I would have collected a few. I'm keeping my eyes open for them now though.

Here's another mystery bug to keep an eye out for on buckeye in spring:

So far just those two observations from Iowa, both from mid-May.
