Notiophilus sp. - Notiophilus semistriatus

Notiophilus sp. - Notiophilus semistriatus
North Bethesda, Montgomery County, Maryland, USA
November 25, 2014
I think this is Notiophilus novemstriatus based on striae 2-3 not reaching the apex of the elytra. However, there is some lightening of the elytra at the apex, although it is not as pronounced as BugGuide’s examples of Notiophilus biguttatus. Can N. biguttatus be ruled out and do other Notiophilus species like N. semistriatus have to be considered? TIA

Moved tentatively
Moved from Ground Beetles.

Three Notiophilus known in MD:
aeneus, novemstriatus, semistriatus. N. biguttatus: known southern limit is CT-RI, not that close to MD but still worth pursuing as possible new range extension. I trust you're using the essential keys by Lindroth and/or Bousquet. In the meantime, a Sherlockian deduction might be: (1) legs dark > not aeneus; (2) elytral interval not markedly wide & MD > semistriatus.

Thanks
I'm afraid the Lindroth key is no longer available online but I'll look for the Bousquet key. Thanks again for the help

Go for it.
My note above should have said "elytral interval #2 not markedly wide". You have the option of mailing me the specimen for accurate ID and photo-vouchering.

Thanks
You're going to cringe when you read this but all I have are the photos. Unless you and V Belov think otherwise, I suspect this one should stay at the genus level
