Coelocnemis sp.
Most likely this is a species of Coelocnemis, characteristic of dry pine forests.

Dry it is, pine it isn't. Mostly oak woodland with some sycamore and, oddly a few maple seeds scattered on the ground. (Haven't been able to find any maples in the county, but they're supposed to be here.)

Yes, Coelocnemis
They can be found much more widely than Eric indicated. I used to find them commonly in the Central Valley in riparian woodlands along the Sacramento River.
Possibly you are finding boxelder seeds.
