Range
eastern two-thirds of US and adjacent parts of Canada (Nova Scotia to Saskatchewan) (2)(3)
Season
The adults are common from May to September. There is one generation per year in the north. There are two or more generations southward. (1)
Food
Larvae have been reared on yellowed and withered sedge leaves. (1)
Remarks
Common. In eastern US, may be confused with Macrochilo hypocritalis (which doesn't occur in Canada)

Here are some things to look for on these two species:
Check out the ST line on the wings. (with, vs. without the thick-dark shading) This is the most obvious difference. In M. absorptalis, it is almost an exact copy of the PM line and reaches all the way to the apex.
In M. hypocritalis it is much thinner and lighter than the shading on the PM line and usually it fades out well before the apex. Next, check out the terminal line. (solid, vs. dashed)
