Laphria thoracica - Bumblebee Like Robber Fly - Laphria

Laphria thoracica - Bumblebee Like Robber Fly - Laphria
Hopkins, Allegan County, Michigan, USA
June 16, 2010
Size: 28mm
I do wish I had another angle. I was in my UPS truck, drove to the end of this driveway and the creature flew onto a grape leaf to my left. It stayed just long enough for me to get 2 quick pictures.

Not thoracica
I don't think this Laphria is thoracica-- note the predominantly yellow mystax. L. thoracica has a mostly black mystax. Perhaps L. royalensis or insignis, but I don't feel confident with those species and would want to consult with someone else.

Moved

Probably
thoracica but tougher with one angle. Orange leg tinging highly suggestive though.
